    Abstract
    5 ABSTRACT The prevalence of esophageal cancer remains a substantial public health challenge, particularly in the Kisumu County area where the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital provides care. The main objective the study is to determine factors contributing to the increased incidence of esophageal cancer among residents in Kisumu County. Specifically; To assess the risk factors associated with incidence of esophageal cancer among residents of Kisumu County; To evaluate the level of awareness of esophageal cancer among residents of Kisumu County; To ascertain sources of information regarding esophageal cancer among the residents of Kisumu County. This will be a cross-sectional study design. The study targeted individuals aged 18-55 years as the patients within the age gap had interacted with the concept of esophageal cancer from various physicians within the health facility. The sample size determined by Yamano Taro formular was 40 participants. Structured questionnaires were used. Each questionnaire was sectioned as per objective. The ethical clearance was issued from relevant authorities and consent was sought from the respondent. The purpose of the study is to determine factors contributing to the high incidence of esophageal cancer among residents of Kisumu County and thus information acquired from the study to be used in reduce the incidences and sensitize the communities in Kisumu County of esophageal Cancer. The data suggested that; the socio-demographic profile showcases a diverse range of ages, educational backgrounds, marital statuses, employment statuses, and monthly household incomes. This diversity highlights the need for targeted and tailored approaches in raising awareness and disseminating information about esophageal cancer; On awareness of esophageal cancer, participants demonstrated varied perceptions regarding its causes and risk factors. Genetic factors, aging, unhealthy lifestyles, and family history were commonly recognized, while there were differing degrees of awareness regarding the contributions of drug use and environmental factors.
